What You Won’t Be Getting From Us: Harmful, toxic chemicals
All paint has three major components: a pigment for color and hiding powder; a binder that holds the pigment to the surface; and a carrier to maintain the pigment and binder in liquid form. Often chemicals containing Volatile Organic Compounds are utilized to perform these functions and include: petrochemicals, solvents, mercury, formaldehyde, and benzene. That distinctive smell of paint is actually dibutyl and diethyl phthalate – two very volatile compounds!
All commercially produced mainstream paints include significant amounts of VOCs– found in the solvents, binders, stabilizers, insecticides, fungicides, preservatives and sometimes even the pigments. Some are known carcinogens while others cause liver or kidney damage. In smaller doses the off-gassing (which can last for years) from VOCs can lead to dizziness, disorientation, headaches, loss of muscle control, and irregular heartbeat.
Lead based paints have been illegal in the United States and Canada since 1978 although lead, along with cadmium and chromium, can still be found in pigments. Even if you don’t plan to repaint check what’s on your walls. Homes or businesses built prior to 1980 may still have lead-based paint on the walls which pose a serious hazard to children.
California Proposition 65
Proposition 65 publishes a list of chemicals that are known by the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. Follow this link to their site.
